Introduction to POT - Wheel Throwing

Join our 6-week Introduction to POT - Wheel Throwing course. Taking you from a block of clay to a glazed pottery piece.

Each week, you'll join us at POT studios for a 2.5 hour class, either on Saturday mornings or Wednesday evenings. In our courses, POT supplies all clay, glaze and all of your pottery pieces created will be fired twice. Take a peek at the tabs above to see an outline of what to expect in our classes. 

After completing one of our Introduction to POT sessions, we then invite you to continue your pottery practise in our 3 hour POT MAKE sessions. In these sessions you'll have full use of our beautiful POT studio and the support of a POT mentor. 

// Week 1

  • Studio clay, how to use the clay and the results that can be achieved. 
  • Clay preparation for wheel throwing.
  • Use of the POT studio, tools and equipment. 
  • Firing and the kiln.  
  • Clean up procedures at POT studios. 
  • Demonstration of getting started on potter's wheel. 
  • Beginning wheel throwing and focusing on centring the clay on the wheel.

// Week 2

  • Demonstration of using the potter's wheel. 
  • Continued practise in throwing pots and using different wheel throwing techniques.

// Week 3:

  • This week you will finish your pieces
  • Trim your work by using the potter’s wheel
  • You will prepare your pieces ready for the first firing
  • We will discuss the firing processes
  • Things that can go wrong

// Week 4:

  • This week you will be glazing your pottery pieces
  • You will learn how to use wax to create a design
  • You will learn about brush on or dipping glazing techniques


  • January 9th Course, classes on Wednesday January 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th, February 6th and 13th from 6pm - 8:30pm.
  • February 20th Course, classes on Wednesday February 20th, 27th, March 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th from 6pm - 8:30pm. 
  • June 5th Course, classes on Wednesday June 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th, July 3rd and 10th from 6pm - 8:30pm.
